EVENT 3 | MOHOLY-NAGY

I went to Moholy-Nagy's Future Present exhibition at LACMA together with the concert at night. This whole set of exposure to Moholy-Nagy gave me a quite complicated feeling towards modern arts and also the collaboration work between art and science.
I appreciate Moholy-Nagy's photogram works a lot since they connect very well with my previous exposure to photogram. I am always fascinated by photogram precursors who recorded the track of sunlight, the transfer of energy within metal and even the movement of fireflies by directly exposing the object to light sensitive materials, which gave part of the creation process to nature. Moholy had an interesting piece of work by exposing his face to the light-sensitive paper and recorded part of his cheek. It reminds of me of a novel called Veronica's Shroud. The artist in the novel used photogram to get a print of the whole human body. Moholy is such an avant garde who experiments infinitely with the possible forms of photogram.

More importantly, Moholy is a great art-scientist. He explored multiple media to express his art works by using new materials in twentieth century like plexiglas. He utilized perspective a lot, which well connects to our previous lecture about math and art. The objects of his work are delicately designed to project various angels of light on the wall, making audience fully appreciate the charm of the soul of an object: shadow.

The concert after the exhibition comprised several pieces and each pieces is composed based on Moholy-Nagy's work. The insect-shaped work was presented in a digital way. The musicians were trying to present the digital light in terms of music. Although I appreciate Moholy's work a lot, which possesses high aesthetics values, the concert was a torture for me. When Moholy's work is represented in a digital way and the charm of light and shadow has been completely lost. This concert made me think that art works should always flow smoothly. The inspiration comes naturally with creation. Otherwise, it would only be a rigid and inanimate work, even the addition of science and technology would not be able to save it.
